The first phase of the operation was completed in August, resulting in 24 arrests.

'Illegal drugs and the problems they cause are relentless, they kill people and destroy communities over time. Using any sort of illegal drug is destructive and affects the quality of life for everyone,' said Sheriff Mike Prendergast. 'Illegal drugs have no place here in our community. We aren't passing out warnings, we're slapping on handcuffs, and we are taking these criminals to jail to face justice. The men and women of this office took an oath to protect and serve the citizens of Citrus County, and to protect and serve they will.'

During the second phase of operation, detectives conducted four search warrants at residences on the east side of the community:

  • 6841 North Bighorn Point, Hernando, FL
  • 4505 North Canyon Terrace, Hernando, FL
  • 4 South Wadsworth Avenue, Hernando, FL
  • 3357 E Buffalo Lane, Hernando, FL

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office executed 21 arrest warrants and arrested 30 people in the process, thirteen of whom have prior felony convictions.

'Simply put, ladies and gentlemen, these are not upstanding model citizens of Citrus County,' said Prendergast. 'They are hardcore drug dealers, they are known criminals, and we’ve had them on or target board for a long time.”

Resident Roy Stanard, who lives nearby one of the homes where a warrant was executed, expressed relief that something had been done.

'I’ve been telling the sheriff’s office about this for awhile now,' Stanard told us. 'About time, and they did a great job coming here and hitting these places. They need to clean this neighborhood up.”

Stanard did express some skepticism, however, about the long-term effectiveness of today's arrests.

'Problem is, the court system slaps them on the hand, cuts 'em loose,' he explained. 'Where does that leave us? Right back where we are again. They’re back here two weeks later, they’ll be doing it again.”

What Is Operation Green Light?

Operation Green Light is an initiative to assist citizens who may be facing steep penalties for unpaid traffic tickets and criminal fees that have been send to collection agencies. Once an unpaid fine goes to a collection agency, the collection fee can add as much as 40% onto ticket fines. Operation Green Light allows citizens to pay these fines in full without collection fees, which will allow many drivers to reinstate their suspended drivers licenses and get a “Green Light” back onto Florida roads.

The catch? For most counties, this is a one-day reprieve, and most counties will be observing the program in April. Lines can form early in the morning for drivers anxious to get their licenses reinstated without these hefty collection fees, so make sure to look up your nearest participating location to get in early. http://www.flccoc.org/OperationGreenLight.php
